Project Safe Streets

Speeding and discourteous behavior of motorists are adversely impacting a growing number of La Palma residents. These conditions also have a potentially negative effect on pedestrians and bicyclists, particularly near schools.

Over the years, the City has responded to these conditions with the installation of traffic control devices, roadway features, pedestrian improvements, and through the deployment of resources to enforce traffic and parking regulations.

Studies consistently show that most speeders in residential neighborhoods actually live in those neighborhoods. Project Safe Streets seeks to change the way residents and visitors perceive the dangers of speeding on La Palma streets. In order to change driver habits and attitudes, speeding must become socially unacceptable.

Project Safe Streets speed reduction program will utilize varying methods to provide safety education to residents, schools, and businesses.

The primary goal of Project Safe Streets is to leave no doubt for anyone who drives through our City that speeding and aggressive driving is not acceptable or tolerated. This will be accomplished by:
  • Increasing public awareness of neighborhood traffic safety issues
  • Increasing voluntary compliance of traffic laws in residential areas
  • Changing the social acceptability of traffic violations
  • Reducing speeding and reckless driving on residential streets
  • Increasing the feeling of safety in La Palma
  • Increasing awareness of the dangers of speeding
  • Identifying and promoting effective speed enforcement activities

Pedestrian Safety
The safety of pedestrians is a vital aspect of Project Safe Streets.  In an effort to further promote pedestrian safety the City has prepared pedestrian safety tips for pedestrians and motorists.
