New City Manager

The City Council should search long and hard to replace the departing city manager to find a qualified candidate at a much lower salary. The current city manager makes $171K annually, plus benefits and pension. The Governor of CA will make about $174K in 2011 and is #7 highest paid in the US.

By all accounts, our current City Manager is extraordinarily OVERPAID. I have heard the arguments that his salary is comparable to other city managers of a similar size...that speaks nothing of his qualifications or value-added for the egregious salary and benefits received, but far more to the fact that ALL city managers are vastly overpaid.
The City Council needs to find a candidate willing to that will work for a far less, but reasonable salary appropriate for a public servant. Stop the bloated salaries, benefits and pensions of the public employees..

Given the Council approves every action, we do not need a city manager making as much as the Governor or CA.

The City was preparing a new topic about the City Manager recruitment, but you beat us - thank you for the suggestions. The City Council is seeking public input regarding the type of candidate the community desires for the new Manager. There will be a community Study Session regarding the City Manager recruitment, during the March 20 City Council meeting, which starts at 7:00 p.m. We encourage you and the entire community to attend the meeting and provide more details about the type of person you think should be the next executive leader of the City.

Remember that a city manager is not the CEO of a corporation. He does not seek profits for the growth of a company. A city manager is a human resources officer and a bureaucrat. What other city managers make should have no bearing on what we pay. If other city councils are fools, why should we follow? Government employees are not producers of anything, they are caretakers of regulations that they usually create. Why did our last manager make almost the same salary as our district's congressman? The responsibilities are vastly less serious. Ridiculous. Don't be fools and pay up, these are not sports athletes with some special talent that our team has to have. We just need a standard paper pusher. Also, putting in a clause that guarantees the manager to be the highest paid city employee is just plain foolish.

Perhaps we need to look for someone who doesn't fit the traditional City Manager mold. The freshest apples come straight from the tree. Doing things the same way every other city does them yields the same result. As we've seen in cities like Santa Ana, Stanton, Fullerton and other neighboring communities, those results aren't always desirable. We are a small city with limited resources but an enviable quality of life and wonderful citizenry. Lets not emulate Anaheim or Costa Mesa. We are a unique community with specific needs and capabilities. We need a City Manager who understands and is comfortable with those facts. Ultimately, we must be able to afford whoever we hire and the right candidate will understand and support that fact.

Well folks, the "community Study Session regarding the City Manager recruitment" has come and gone last Tuesday; perhaps the least publicized agenda item of such importance in years. Unfortunately, it was the last agenda item 90 mins into the mtg. and I was the only one to speak. After the mtg. I spoke to two council members and got the full impression that we are stuck with the status quo. I was told the City Mgr. must be the highest paid person on city payroll. According to the city website, we have 5 Director level positions, including the Chief of Police, that range in salary from $114K to $152K, plus the bloated City Mgr job @ $172K. Add another 15-20% for benefits and pension annually. Council is fully on board with this process and endorses the status quo, wasteful government spending we have here in La Palma and in all of CA, so when you get your mailbox jammed with campaign re-election promises this fall, vote for someone who will cause real change & keep campaign promises.

Thank you for taking an active role in the process. Letting the Council know your concern and demanding accountability is the genesis of change.

One note, fringe benefits are typically 30-35% for a City Manager position so the total cost to La Palmans will be in the $220K range with an annual salary of $172K. At that level of compensation, we should accept nothing less than optimal performance and demonstrated value to residents.
